Thanks, Sarupa. Yes, it’s definitely still more complicated for self-employed people, though hopefully things are gradually improving. Some lenders are more accommodating to people in this situation than others, so it’s important to shop around if you are in the market for a self-employed mortgage.

While many argue that was unsafe, many high street lenders still just say NO if you are a LTD small business / freelancer and use it to show they are making safe mortgage decisions. I do feel more needs to be done for this sector!

Thanks, Caz. The number of self-employed people actually fell due to the pandemic, but I expect it to start growing again for the reasons you mention. I agree it’s ideal if you have specific skills that are in demand, but there are plenty of other opportunities for people who are willing to put in some time and effort. There are lots of interesting and potentially profitable franchises, for example.

I imagine there’ll be increasing numbers of self-employed people as time goes on in this uncertain economy, though it’s getting harder to see how to make a niche unless you have particular skills (ie. tradesman or super coding/tech skills).
