Thanks, Caz. I agree, that was cheeky! They shouldn't have told you getting one was compulsory. But anyway, since you have one now, I hope you are getting some benefit from it.

We recently had one fitted by NPower, despite my reservations, and they'd said to us that it would be made mandatory and basically that we'd have to have it. Cheeky!! Great write-up, and very helpful for those considering one :)

Thanks, Sally. That was a coincidence, wasn't it?! I don't really see a downside either, but I know there are a lot of people who have concerns about it. It will be better once meters are entirely inter-operable between suppliers, but I don't really think that's a strong enough reason for refusing one at the moment.

A rather timely post - we had smart meters installed this morning. They are actually our second lot of smart meters, as you mention when we switched energy suppliers the original meters didn't communicate with the new supplier. The new supplier has fitted new meters at no charge. We never bothered with the in-house display with the first set of meters because it was complicated to understand, we also still had meter readers turn up to read the smart meter! The new in-house display looks a lot easier to use so we may use this one and possibly reduce our energy bills.
I don't see any down side to smart meters, they are free and it's up to you whether you make any use of the in-house display.
